As Goldendoodles have quickly risen in popularity and are becoming one of the most popular breeds, there are many people who have jumped on this to become a ‘breeder’ of this incredible breed. With so many options out there, how do you know what breeder to choose from? Why do we believe our members of the Goldendoodle Association of North America are among the best?
Scams in the puppy industry are increasing every day it seems. Here are some of our suggestions on what to look for when working with a breeder:
- Verify the parent dogs have had their health clearances performed and that they have been awarded the certifications for those health tests
- Health guarantee/warranty is at least a two year warranty and that you don’t have to return the puppy in order to exercise the warranty, plus the breeder offers monetary assistance with expenses for genetic defects, or a replacement puppy
- Verify pedigrees back to the purebred ancestors to prove that you’re getting a puppy that has Golden Retriever and Poodle genes or that they have performed the DNA testing on the parents
- Does some kind of puppy curriculum with their litters
- Provides pictures/videos of their puppies/whelping area/puppy raising area
Breeders are extremely busy because they’re spending their time raising your puppy in the best way possible. They may not always have time to send you pictures/videos on your timeline; however, they should be keeping an active social media account/website where pictures/videos are uploaded on a regular basis.
So why choose a GANA breeder?
When you choose to go with a breeder who is a member of the Goldendoodle Association of North America, this homework has already been done for you. GANA stands heads and shoulders above other breed clubs for our health clearances and ethical requirements. Certifying breeding dogs in turn certifies each litter as having come from the healthiest parents possible.
In order to maintain this level of excellence, our club rules were established to maintain our outstanding level of puppy quality expected by those who purchase our puppies.
Health Testing
In order to become a member of GANA, a breeder must health test their dogs. The very basic health testing required are hips and cardiac. Most breeders with our organization test for the highest level which includes hips, cardiac, elbows, patellas (if size requires), and required DNA testing for diseases such as night blindness, canine bleeding disorder, degenerative myelopathy, just to name a few. You can see the extensive list of requirements here.

Health Warranty
Not only are the members of our club required to health test their parent dogs, they also provide a warranty for life-inhibiting genetic defects until at least 2 years of age.
Code of Ethics
Our members pledge to our extensive Code of Ethics. You can view that here. (https://www.goldendoodleassociation.com/for-breeders/gana-breeder-code-of-ethics/)
